LMS

LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

MEANING

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, automation, and delivery of educational courses, training programs, materials or learning and development programs. The learning management system concept emerged directly from E-learning. Learning management systems make up the largest segment of the learning system market. The first introduction of the LMS was in the late 1990s.

PURPOSE

An LMS delivers and manages all types of content, including videos, courses, workshops, and documents. In the education and higher education markets, an LMS will include a variety of functionality that is similar to corporate but will have features such as rubrics, teacher and instructor-facilitated learning, a discussion board, and often the use of a syllabus.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LMS

  • Course creation and content management

It seems like course management features would be included in all LMS platform options, but the most basic functions of a learning management system do not include course creation. Some tools require you to bring your own content from a third-party platform, which means you’ll need to build training materials in a separate system and import them into the LMS program.

  • Mobile learning

When your LMS offers a mobile-responsive design or a native mobile app, an employee can participate in training from any location. It also gives employees the flexibility to access training materials from the devices that work best for their unique accessibility needs and learning styles. Mobile learning is especially helpful for distributed teams and certification programs that engage in training across multiple locations.

  • Native integration

Depending on your organization’s needs and the goals of your training program, the right LMS integrations will help with tracking and managing the learning experience. Some platforms integrate with communication and collaboration tools, like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slack, to create blended and interactive learning experiences.

  • Blended learning

Blended training courses are delivered both online and in person, allowing employees to choose the format that works best for their location, schedule, and learning style.A blended program might adapt the same training materials for each setting or use one approach to supplement the other.

  • Asynchronous learning

One of the best features for improving engagement and knowledge retention is asynchronous learning the ability for learners to complete coursework at their own pace. This means they don’t have to attend a lecture or work with an instructor at a set time.

CHALLENGES OF LMS

  • Ineffective Training for Teachers

A well-trained teacher is more likely to be comfortable using an LMS effectively. Inadequate training in areas such as using the LMS and how to utilize it effectively can lead to problems with students learning and teachers getting frustrated.

Personalization refers to the ability of an LMS to cater to individual needs, such as student or staff needs, and the ability to personalize different aspects of the platform. It is common for teachers to use their own resources they have developed over time but cannot use them in the LMS. This can lead to a loss of time and effort.

  • Lack of PowerPoint Integration

PowerPoint is a commonly used tool in schools. Integrating it into an LMS is essential if you wish it to be utilized effectively by staff, students, or teachers. Without this feature, sharing materials becomes difficult for the users. This often results in staff reverting back to old, unconnected methods of sharing information.

  •  Problems with Course Management and Content

Course management refers to the ability to organize information so that students have access to it and teachers can use it efficiently. Without this feature, teachers will struggle to find suitable materials for their lessons. This creates a problem when it comes to assessing students and tracking their progress.

  •  Issues with User Interaction

An LMS is only as good as the people using it, and problems with interaction are a common issue that can lead to users becoming unhappy with the platform as a whole. This leads to a loss of productivity and work satisfaction
